Luke Hales / Getty Images Share full articleThe New Hampshire Fisher Cats, the Double-A affiliate of the Toronto Blue Jays, beat the Portland (Maine) Sea Dogs 12-7 on Tuesday night, scoring eight of their 10 runs in the second inning without registering a hit. In the inning, Portland pitchers Hayden Mullins, Jorge Juan and Ed Feeney combined to surrender eight walks, four wild pitches, hit two batters and gave up a sacrifice fly to score eight runs before New Hampshire outfielder Ismael Munguia singled to score two more runs. One hit and 10 runs scored for the Fisher Cats against three Sea Dogs pitchers, whose defense didn’t make any errors in the frame. Juan’s line in the box score read 0.0 innings pitched, zero hits allowed, five earned runs allowed. After finishing the second inning, Feeney stayed in the game and pitched scoreless third and fourth innings. “I don’t ever remember seeing that, here or any other game I’ve ever seen,” Sea Dogs president Geoff Iacuessa told WGME (Channel 13) in Portland. “It was crazy. I thought maybe something was going on with the scoreboard. And then I checked the GameChanger, and it was correct.” The Sea Dogs, who are affiliated with the Boston Red Sox, did respond with two runs in the bottom of the second inning on a frigid evening, as crews had to clear snow from the field earlier. The thermometer read 35 degrees at first pitch. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, scoring eight runs with no hits was a feat no Major League Baseball team has ever accomplished. There have been just 16 instances in AL/NL history in which a pitcher allowed five runs without surrendering a hit in 1 2/3 or fewer innings, according to MLB.com. On Tuesday, two Sea Dogs pitchers accomplished the unwanted feat in the same inning. Spot the pattern.
