Hundreds of Blue Badges have been cancelled by the Government as it cracks down on fraudulent drivers using the permits in the North East of England.

In total, 459 unauthorised Blue Badges have been cancelled in a joint operation between the Public Sector Fraud Authority and Wirral Council.

It found that hundreds of drivers were using parking permits that had been issued to residents in the Wirral that have since passed away.

The enforcement aims to protect parking spaces for those who truly need them, having saved taxpayers around £363,000 between 2024 and 2025.

Blue Badges are critical for motorists with disabilities to access services by allowing them to park closer to shops and other amenities.

Data shows that just over three million drivers across England have a Blue Badge, representing around one in 20 people, as of May 31 last year.

Despite this, in the last two years alone, the estimated value of Blue Badges cancelled across the UK was more than £34million.

The Government stated that it would continue cracking down on people committing fraud by using Blue Badges that do not belong to them.

Fake Blue Badge and a real Blue Badge

Using data from Wirral Council against central Government records from the Department for Work and Pensions, the National Fraud Initiative took action.

It cross-referenced matches to internal records, which contributed to the creation of a "high-priority hotlist", prompting the cancellation of 459 Blue Badges.

Cabinet Office Minister Satvir Kaur said: "Blue Badges are a lifeline for disabled people, allowing them to go about their daily business safely and with dignity.

"Every time a badge is misused, it unfairly deprives someone in genuine need of a vital parking space right when they need it most.

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS

Blue Badge

"By working closely with Wirral Council, we are ensuring those in need are properly supported, and taxpayer money is protected."

Traffic wardens across the Wirral will conduct targeted patrols and now have the power to confiscate Blue Badges on the spot.

These patrols will take place around the region and will be seen on roads near local schools to catch any fraudulent drivers taking advantage of parking rules.

Residents caught using Blue Badges belonging to a person who has passed away will face formal warning letters and hefty fines of up to £1,000.

Work completed by the Government across the public sector in the last year is estimated to have saved taxpayers more than £7.5billion.

Wirral Council leader and Chair of the Policy and Resources Committee, Councillor Paula Basnett, said it was "sad" that people were taking advantage of the Blue Badge scheme.

She added: "Our response in Wirral has been to use all the tools at our disposal to conduct a proactive, intelligence-led operation, which is backed up with a stronger enforcement strategy.

"This includes giving traffic wardens the power to immediately cancel and remove illegally used badges and issue warning letters with the potential for fines up to £1,000.

"We have also been collaborating closely with our neighbouring Council in Liverpool to support the management of formal prosecutions. This demonstrates our joined-up approach to tackling fraud locally."
