Ben Stokes scores century in first game back since England retirement

Ben Stokes scored a century in his first game back since retiring from international cricket with England.

Stokes marked his return to domestic cricket by helping Durham chase down 257 to defeat Derbyshire by five wickets in the One-Day Cup.

The former England captain, appearing in his first List A match for his county in close to 12 years following his retirement from Test cricket three weeks prior, produced a magnificent 108 not out to steer his side home.

The 35-year-old all-rounder was forced to overcome multiple periods of cramping throughout his knock, at one point collapsing in agony upon reaching his half-century, yet refused to yield as he dragged Durham across the finishing line.

Derbyshire's innings was built around Martin Andersson's well-constructed hundred, which provided the foundation for the Falcons' total of 256 for nine.

Brooke Guest offered strong support with 48, and while the pair were at the crease, a score beyond 300 looked achievable.

However, Guest's dismissal caused a collapse as Andersson found himself running out of batting partners.

Stokes contributed with the ball, sending down nine smooth overs that cost just 38 runs, though he was unable to claim a wicket.

Stokes entered the fray at number four with Durham's score on just 24, both openers having fallen to Ben Aitchison's incisive new-ball spell.

He began slowly before sprinting along, reaching 50 off 71 deliveries courtesy of his fifth boundary.

From that point on, the physio became a near-constant presence as cramp struck repeatedly.

Yet Stokes constructed a series of vital partnerships to dismantle the target: 74 alongside Will Rhodes, who contributed 45, followed by stands of 66 with Colin Ackermann (28), 52 with Ollie Robinson (23), and 41 with skipper Kasey Aldridge (23).

Despite hobbling visibly, he pressed on past three figures to complete a remarkable comeback innings.

The match took place on the same day as the opening round of this year's Hundred competition, yet the chance to witness Stokes in action for the first time since stepping away from international cricket at the end of last month proved a powerful draw.

Hundreds of additional spectators turned up at the County Ground, eager to catch a glimpse of the former England skipper.

His sudden retirement came out of the blue, explaining it was due to him being left "burnt out".

He told Sky Sports: "There are all sorts of emotions when this day comes to everyone. There's relief, there's happiness, there's excitement, there's sadness. All of those words, they sum it up pretty well.

"It's the best thing that I've ever been asked to do - captain this team and captain this country - and I'll never begrudge any moment where I've walked this team out. It's simply the greatest honour you could ever put on your shoulders as a player.

"But there's another side to it all which people don't see, and people don't understand.

"My family, and particularly my wife, can see what you go through emotionally. As good as it is, there are bits where it does get to you, it does drain you, it does affect you in a negative way.

"But, overall, it's literally been four and a half years where I've loved every single moment. But sometimes, some moments have been harder than others."
