Ben Leo has discussed the “cult-like” following of Luigi Mangione after he pleaded guilty to the killing of UnitedHealthcare chief executive Brian Thompson.
The 28-year-old Ivy League-educated data engineer faces the possibility of spending the rest of his life in prison after he admitted responsibility for shooting the multi-millionaire in 2024.
Discussing the case, GB News host Martin Daubney shared his disbelief that Mangione had “some kind of poster boy on the left”.
Ben concurred, pointing to the fascination surrounding the 28-year-old’s “apparent good looks” and “apparent charm", which created a substantial following after his identity became known.
He said Mangione had become a “sort of bizarre cult-like figure”, particularly among some women on the political left.
Ben explained the University of Pennsylvania alumnus has also received mail while being held in prison on remand awaiting proceedings over the killing.
“I shot Mr Thompson in Manhattan, and he died,” Mangione told a court in New York this evening. He now faces between 24 and 40 years in prison, with sentencing due on December 18.
