Beloved boy, 15, who cops say was run over and killed by drunk sporting heir near $1m family home

Joseph Savarino, 26, has been charged with driving while impaired (DWI) after his Ford Explorer fatally struck Jack O'Shea as he rode an e-bike in Durham, North Carolina.  Durham Police told the Daily Mail officers responded to the scene of the crash at the intersection of Cole Mill Road and West Wyndham Lane just before 9pm on Saturday. 'The juvenile was struck by the vehicle and pronounced deceased at the scene,' the department said, adding that Savarino was not injured in the collision.  'The investigation is ongoing, and there are no further updates at this time.' O'Shea's heartbroken mother, Allison Bickel O'Shea, remembered him as a 'smart' and 'handsome' teenager as she shared the details of his final day on social media.      'It is with unfathomable sadness that Chris and I share that our perfect, smart, athletic, fearless, and handsome baby boy, Jack, passed away at just 15 years old,' she wrote on Facebook.  'We are finding comfort in what was his last perfect day. The family home is pictured above  'He then played two baseball games with his high school team, where he did what he always did - showed up fully and excelled at first base.  'Later, he went on his usual afternoon bike ride with friends. 'As he was coming back into our neighborhood, he was involved in an accident and was hit by a car. Jesus took him immediately.' Bickel O'Shea said her family, including Jack's 13-year-old sister Emily, is struggling to come to terms with the grief.  'Jack’s love of hiking, maps, and adventure was inspiring,' she added. 'He saw the world with curiosity and courage, always ready for what was next.' 'He saw the world with curiosity and courage, always ready for what was next.'  Debbie who posted her son's $100,000 bond according to court records The legal filings indicate that Savarino allegedly admitted to authorities that he had been drinking on the evening of the crash. A judge ordered the revocation of Savarino's license for at least 30 days. He was released after posting a $100,000 bond. The bond was posted by his mother, Debbie, who is the daughter of the legendary Duke basketball coach who won 1,202 games and five National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) titles in his career. It is not the first time the Savarino family has been involved in a DWI case. Joseph's brother, Michael, was charged with DWI in 2021 and was sentenced to 12 months probation. Michael's arrest came while he was playing for his grandfather on Duke's basketball team. At the time, Krzyzewski said he considered the arrest a 'violation of our standards' but that he was 'handling it.' No comments have so far been submitted.
