Beach tragedy as man dies on packed seafront on hottest day of year
A man tragically died on a busy beach this bank holiday weekend, with a popular seafront closed to the public amid the soaring temperatures.
Emergency services responded to the scene in Hastings, East Sussex, yesterday after they received calls of a “medical incident”.
Sussex Police today confirmed a man sadly died in the area of Warrior Square in St Leonards.
Officers initially responded to reports of concern for a man’s welfare at 11am, with an air ambulance dispatched to assist teams on the ground.
Despite the best efforts of medical staff, the man passed away at the scene.
His next of kin were informed, and are being supported by officers.
His death is not thought to be suspicious.
A spokesman for the force said: “Emergency services responded to a medical incident on the beach near Warrior Square, St Leonards, following concerns for a man’s welfare.
“Officers assisted with the emergency response after the incident was reported at 11am on May 24.
“Sadly, despite the best efforts of paramedics, the man was declared deceased at the scene. His next of kin have been informed and our thoughts are with them at this difficult time.
“There were no suspicious circumstances and a report will be prepared for HM Coroner.”

Eight areas of England met heatwave conditions on Sunday amid a spell of unusually high May temperatures, as hot weather continues today.
The heatwave threshold, which is consecutive days of 26C or 27C heat, was met at Kew Gardens, Heathrow and Northolt in London, as well as Benson in Oxfordshire, Brooms Barn and Santan Downham in Suffolk, and High Breech and Writtle in Essex.
The high temperatures have seen families flock to beaches over the weekend to enjoy the sun, with a high of 32.3C recorded at Kew Gardens, making it the hottest day of the year so far.
Sunday was also the UK’s warmest May day for at least 79 years.
New national May temperature records were set again today, with 32.8C being the highest record for May, set in 1944.
The Met Office confirmed this Bank Holiday Monday is the hottest May day ever recorded, as temperatures have soared to 33.5C.
The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) issued its first amber health alert of 2026 on Friday, warning of a risk to health, which will remain in place until Wednesday.
