BBC compares Guy Fawkes to Nelson Mandela branding him an 'astonishing activist'

The BBC has come under scrutiny after one of its educational resources for primary school children described Guy Fawkes as an "astonishing activist" and placed him alongside historical figures including Nelson Mandela, Rosa Parks and Emmeline Pankhurst.

The content, available on the BBC Bitesize learning platform, forms part of an interactive educational game titled Back in Time with... Astonishing Activists.

Designed for young learners, the game introduces children to individuals who sought to change society, inviting them to explore the lives of campaigners through a series of interactive activities.

The resource's introduction states that users can "take a trip back in time and learn all about the people who fought racism, campaigned for women's rights... and changed the world forever."

Among those featured is Guy Fawkes, best known for his role in the failed Gunpowder Plot of 1605.

Within the game, children play as Fawkes, helping him evade royal guards beneath the Palace of Westminster before his arrest, and later completing challenges while imprisoned in the Tower of London.

Accompanying educational material explains that Bonfire Night, celebrated each year on November 5, commemorates the foiling of the Gunpowder Plot.

Players can also build a virtual bonfire as part of the activity.

The Gunpowder Plot was an attempt by a group of English Catholics, led by Robert Catesby, to assassinate King James I by detonating explosives beneath Parliament during the State Opening.

The conspirators hoped the attack would trigger an uprising and lead to the installation of a Catholic-friendly monarch, after hopes for greater religious tolerance failed to materialise.

Fawkes was discovered guarding the explosives, later tortured, convicted of treason and executed alongside other conspirators.

The Bitesize game also features anti-apartheid leader Nelson Mandela, civil rights activist Rosa Parks and suffragette Emmeline Pankhurst.

Children playing as Mandela complete activities including putting up anti-apartheid posters, witnessing the passage of time during his imprisonment and selecting members of South Africa's Truth and Reconciliation Commission following the end of apartheid.

Meanwhile, players portraying Pankhurst design campaign banners, recruit supporters for women's suffrage, and collect votes, while the Rosa Parks section focuses on the 1955 Montgomery Bus Boycott, allowing children to help passengers find seats on a desegregated bus.

The educational game appears to have been introduced following the Black Lives Matter protests of 2020, with its promotional material highlighting campaigners who challenged injustice and transformed society.

The BBC has previously faced criticism over historical content published on its education platforms.

In 2023, a GCSE history revision page was removed after criticism of a statement claiming that "every person in Britain is descended from immigrants."

Earlier, educational material linked to Horrible Histories also attracted controversy for claims about the ethnic origins of Britain's earliest inhabitants.

The inclusion of Guy Fawkes alongside internationally recognised civil rights figures has prompted renewed debate over how historical figures should be presented in educational materials for children and the balance between engaging learning resources and historical interpretation.
