Angel Martinez/Getty Images Share articleA banner criticising club president Florentino Perez was removed by stadium security as Real Madrid defeated Real Oviedo 2-0 in their penultimate home game of the season at the Bernabeu. There were boos and whistles directed at star players Vinicius Junior — who captained the side — and second-half substitute Kylian Mbappe. Perez was also picked up on broadcast coverage of the game appearing to argue with Madrid supporters in the stands. This comes after the 79-year-old called for fresh elections at an extraordinary press conference where he also denied suggestions that he would resign and that he had cancer. A banner that read “Florentino, vete ya” (“Florentino, leave now”) was pictured inside the stadium. In the eighth minute, another banner with the words “Florentino, culpable” (“Florentino, guilty”) could be seen behind Oviedo midfielder Santiago Colombatto as he prepared to take a corner, with multiple security members forcefully removing the banner from the fan displaying it. The Athletic has contacted the club for comment. The Bernabeu’s official website states that accessing the stadium with a banner depends on the policy of each event. In footage circulated on social media, Perez appeared to argue with and gesture towards fans seated below the presidential box in the stadium. Vinicius Jr was frequently booed whenever he received the ball, while Mbappe, who began the game on the bench, had his name jeered when it was announced over the stadium loudspeakers before the match. The France captain eventually came on as a substitute in the second half for Gonzalo Garcia (who had given Madrid the lead in the 43rd minute) and received loud whistles from the Bernabeu crowd as he made his way on to the pitch. Mbappe had generated controversy during Sunday’s El Clasico defeat against Barcelona after posting an Instagram story during the game with his side already 2-0 down. The 27-year-old was not included in the squad for that game due to injury. After the Oviedo game, Mbappe commented that head coach Alvaro Arbeloa had said he was the “fourth striker”. “I haven’t played because the coach told me that, as far as he’s concerned, I’m the fourth striker. I accept that and I’ll start on the bench,” he told broadcasters at full-time. “Why wasn’t I in the starting lineup? Ask the coach — I was ready to start, but it’s his decision. I can’t be mad at the coach; you have to respect his opinion.” Mbappe also addressed the jeers from fans, saying: “You have to accept it. It’s the fans’ opinion, and you shouldn’t take it personally — no one’s going to die tonight. It’s normal when you don’t win for people to pick out players to boo. It’s happened at Madrid and with every team in the world. That’s life.” In his post-match press conference, Arbeloa denied telling Mbappe that he was fourth-choice. “He must have misunderstood me; I’m not quite sure what to say, because at no point could I tell him he’s the fourth forward,” he said. Jude Bellingham doubled Madrid’s lead against Oviedo in the 80th minute. The England international, who was also targeted by boos after being substituted on, held both hands aloft towards the supporters after scoring. The win leaves Madrid on 80 points with two games to go, 11 behind Barcelona, who have already secured the title.
