Baby girl murdered at California daycare after being left unsupervised with boy, 17, who has autism

Published: 17:02, 3 July 2026 | Updated: 17:04, 3 July 2026 A four-month-old baby girl was killed at a California daycare after her parents claimed she was left alone with a 17-year-old boy with autism.  Troy May Elaine Cohn died after she was allegedly thrown to the floor inside a home daycare in Claremont on June 29, police said. Officers responded to the daycare at around 11.30am after receiving reports of a medical emergency. 'Upon arrival, officers determined that an infant had been thrown to the floor by a juvenile at the residence,' the Claremont Police Department said in a statement. The infant was rushed to Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center before being transferred to Children's Hospital of Orange County due to the severity of her injuries. She later died. A 17-year-old boy was arrested at the scene and booked into Los Padrinos Juvenile Hall on suspicion of murder. The Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office has since charged him with murder. The teenager was arraigned Thursday and remains in custody. His identity has not been released because he is a juvenile. Troy's parents, Jasmyne Cohn and Anthony Owens, told KTLA that they believe daycare staff left their daughter unsupervised with the teenager, creating what they described as a dangerous environment. 'My child had bruises all over her body. Her head was fractured,' she told the outlet. 'I lost my daughter due to the negligence of this daycare.' It remains unclear why the 17-year-old was at the daycare, which is intended for children aged eight and younger. Cohn and Owens told the outlet that they believe he may have been attending the daycare under the supervision of its owner, though authorities have not confirmed that. Cohn said the teenager should never have been allowed around infants. 'He should not have been in a daycare with children,' she said. 'Not just my child, any child.' The couple said they believe the daycare should be shut down. Police have not said whether the daycare or its owner is under investigation, and authorities have not publicly addressed the level of supervision at the time of the incident.
