Australian man dies in Bali immigration detention after overstaying his visa in the tourist hotspot

Cameron Hughes, 39, from Sydney, died on the way to hospital on Friday night after he was found unresponsive by immigration officers. Mr Hughes had been placed in a detention room at the Ngurah Rai Immigration Office where he was expected to be deported just hours before he died. A spokesperson for the Ngurah Rai Immigration Office said officers noticed on CCTV that Mr Hughes had been 'motionless' for an extended amount of time. 'Officers immediately responded and found him unconscious,' the spokesperson said. 'The officers promptly checked his vital signs, administered first aid including oxygen support, and coordinated with the nearest hospital to dispatch an ambulance.  'Upon arrival, the medical team provided initial emergency treatment before transporting him to Bali Jimbaran General Hospital for further medical care.  'While on route to the hospital, he was pronounced dead. According to the hospital's preliminary assessment, a suspected heart attack was identified as a contributing factor at the time of the incident.' Mr Hughes, who lived in Jimbaran, in South Kuta, was given opportunities to resolve his immigration status but failed to do so, leading to his detainment.  Daily Mail Australia understands Mr Hughes had overstayed his visa by 98 days. The Head of the Ngurah Rai Immigration Office, Bugie Kurniawan, expressed his deepest condolences to the 39-year-old's family. The Indonesian National Police are investigating his death.
