Published: 04:27, 2 July 2026 | Updated: 04:27, 2 July 2026 A Perth woman who was seen strangling her puppy because she was fed up with it destroying her belongings has been handed a suspended jail sentence. Lani Beattie, 23, was filmed by a passerby standing over 'lifeless' Roxy in the backyard of her Beckenham home on October 13 last year. The witness called police and RSPCA WA after seeing the one-year-old dog tied to a carport pole with a rope around her neck. They told The West they heard the staffy-kelpie cross puppy as it yelped, screamed, choked and struggled. The witness reportedly also saw Beattie strangling Roxy with a second rope before suspending the puppy by the neck as she tried to escape. Beattie told police she didn't want Roxy anymore because the dog was 'chewing up all my s***' and frustrated her. Roxy was left with bruising, swelling, bleeding in her right eye, and behaviour consistent with psychological harm, examinations at a vet revealed. She has since recovered after being removed from Beattie's care and rehomed by RSPCA WA. Lani Beattie, 23, was filmed by a passerby standing over 'lifeless' Roxy in the backyard of her Beckenham home on October 13 last year. She was convicted of animal cruelty Roxy has since recovered after being removed from Beattie's care and rehomed by RSPCA WA Beattie appeared at Perth Magistrates Court on Thursday, where the RSPCA WA prosecutor said it was an example of 'wicked' and 'sustained' cruelty. Magistrate Michelle Harries called the behaviour 'abhorrent'. 'The facts are in my view serious ... They are facts you should be very ashamed of,' she said. Beattie was convicted of animal cruelty and sentenced to six months and 14 days in prison. The order was suspended for 12 months with supervision and program requirements. She was also banned from owning or caring for animals for five years and ordered to pay more than $1,600 to RSPCA WA. RSPCA WA inspector manager Kylie Green told The West even experienced inspectors were horrified by the abuse. 'It's overwhelming to think of the terror and pain Roxy experienced over an extended period of time that morning,' she said. 'One-year-old dogs, especially those who aren't given the time and patience needed for effective training and the love and attention required to stop them from becoming bored, will naturally chew items left lying around. 'To use that as a justification for torturing an animal - because that's exactly what this offender did - defies all logic and reason.' No comments have so far been submitted.
