He received scholarships, became a Google Youth Advisor, participated in international entrepreneurship programmes and mentored students through global competitions. In 2025, he became the winner of the Global Student Prize, selected from nearly 11,000 nominations across 148 countries. Now comes Georgetown. Adarsh speaking at The Week Education Conclave in June 2026 'I WAS SITTING WITH MY MOTHER' The news of his Georgetown admission arrived in a moment that was far removed from the formalities of an international university application. "I was sitting with my mother when I received the email," Adarsh says. "I remember being extremely excited and almost unable to believe what I was reading. After everything that had happened during the admission process, seeing the Georgetown University in Qatar offer with a full scholarship was a very emotional moment." His mother was the first person he told. "She has been the person behind me throughout this entire journey. Seeing her reaction made the moment even more special," he says. His Georgetown application itself nearly did not happen.ONE DOOR CLOSED, ANOTHER OPENED Adarsh had faced 22 university rejections before enrolling with Second Chance, founded by Cornell University alumna Joan Liu. One after another, applications to universities abroad came back unsuccessful, until his regular admissions options had almost run out. By then, Georgetown University's regular admissions cycle had already closed. "At the time, Second Chance had a partnership with Georgetown University in Qatar related to supporting Palestinian students. Joan asked the university to take a look at my profile and consider making an exception to review my application," Adarsh says. That exception changed his trajectory. "It taught me that sometimes talent is not the problem. People simply need someone willing to open a door and give them a chance." Adarsh says he has benefited from people opening doors for him, and now wants to create more such opportunities for others.advertisementWHY GEORGETOWN, WHY QATAR?Adarsh plans to study mainly Political Science, Economics and International Relations, although Georgetown allows students flexibility to explore different subjects. His interest in policy comes partly from his own experience of Bihar. "I have always been interested in understanding why some policies work while others fail, and how decisions made by governments ultimately affect ordinary people," he says. "Coming from Bihar has also shaped that interest. I have seen how education, employment, healthcare and access to government schemes can fundamentally change someone's opportunities." His experience with Skillzo pushed that thinking further. Working directly with students and communities showed him that while individual initiatives can create change, solving problems at scale also requires understanding policy, institutions and how decisions are made. That is also why Doha appealed to him. Qatar, he says, sits at the intersection of different regions and cultures. Studying there will allow him to understand the Middle East while being part of an international campus. Georgetown's strength in international affairs, politics and policy was another major draw. "I want to understand how policy decisions are made, how countries interact with each other, and how institutions can create meaningful change," he says. The university also offers opportunities to study at its Washington, DC, and Italy campuses, something Adarsh is keen to explore.THE BOY FROM BIHAR IS NOW THINKING ABOUT POLICY The Global Student Prize brought Adarsh a level of recognition that went far beyond his own school and community. He has since met senior public officials and education leaders, including the Governor of Bihar and the state's Education Minister. His work has received attention from people across education, policy and public life. "Winning the Global Student Prize gave much greater visibility to the work I had been doing through Skillzo and created opportunities to meet people and institutions I would otherwise have found difficult to reach." Those conversations have made him think about how Skillzo could work with institutions instead of operating independently. More importantly, he says, the recognition has strengthened a larger idea: students from modest backgrounds can build organisations and contribute to solving real problems.'I DON'T WANT MY JOURNEY TO BE SEEN ONLY AS AN INDIVIDUAL SUCCESS STORY' Adarsh is particularly conscious of what his Georgetown admission could mean to students watching from smaller towns. "I come from Motihari in Bihar, and I know that many students from smaller cities and economically constrained backgrounds often assume that universities like Georgetown are simply not meant for them," he says. His message is not that everyone will get the same result. It is that students should at least give themselves the chance to try. That matters because Adarsh's own ambitions have moved well beyond getting himself out of a difficult situation. He wants to work at the intersection of policy, governance and social impact, particularly in education, employment, youth development and economic opportunity. And Bihar remains central to that vision. "Ultimately, I would like my work to contribute to making Bihar and India places where a person's circumstances at birth do not determine how far they can go," he says. HIS ADVICE: DON'T REJECT YOURSELVES There is one lesson Adarsh has learned repeatedly: rejection does not necessarily mean the end of the road. He has had his share of it, including university rejections before Georgetown. His advice to students who think elite universities are out of reach is simple. "There will be rejections but I'd tell them not to reject themselves. I had many of them myself. But one rejection should not become a conclusion about your potential," he says. He wants students to look beyond the obvious routes and search for scholarships, mentors, organisations and people who might be willing to help. "Build something meaningful with the opportunities you already have, and then keep applying for the opportunities you think are beyond your reach." Then comes the line that perhaps best sums up the journey of the teenager who once left Bihar with Rs 1,000 and an old laptop.
