aims to feature in Aston Villa’s Europa League final against Freiburg. The Athletic reported a fortnight ago that Onana, 24, intended to return in time for the final in Istanbul, having suffered a calf injury at the start of the month against Nottingham Forest. The Belgium midfielder was back in full training this week and took part in Villa’s final session at the Besiktas Park stadium before the match, with manager Unai Emery organising an 11 versus 11 possession drill. “We will decide tomorrow (whether Onana starts) if he is feeling 100 per cent well,” Emery told a press conference on Tuesday. “Of course, he is important player for us, but the last matches without him and without (Boubacar) Kamara and with Victor Lindelof, we have different options. I am confident.” Captain John McGinn and goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez accompanied Emery in his pre-match press conference. McGinn spoke of his pride in leading the team out on Wednesday evening, having joined Villa in 2018 when they were still in the Championship. “I’d say so (my proudest moment),” said the 31-year-old. “It’s been a brilliant journey, full of ups and downs — very close to going back to the Championship. It fills me with pride to see where the club has been and where the club could go. “This is not something where we want to celebrate in a fanfare way. We know how good Freiburg are, how difficult it is to get to a final and we treat them with the utmost respect. “It’ll be nice to see fans out here who were there in Wigan away and Rotherham away when it would have been easier to stay at home.
