Aston Villa make history after thrashing Freiburg to win Europa League

Aston Villa have claimed the Europa League title after dismantling Freiburg 3-0 in Istanbul.

The triumph brings silverware back to Villa Park for the first time since their League Cup success three decades ago.

It also marks the club's second major European honour, coming 44 years after their famous European Cup victory in Rotterdam.

Manager Unai Emery has now lifted this particular trophy on five separate occasions, cementing his reputation as the competition's undisputed master.

Strikes from Youri Tielemans, Emi Buendia and Morgan Rogers sealed a comprehensive victory against the German opponents.

Villa's supporters, who had waited nearly half a century for another continental final, witnessed their side deliver a commanding performance on the continent's second-grandest stage.

Tielemans opened the scoring four minutes before half-time with a superb volley, converting from a cleverly worked short corner routine to fire into the bottom corner.

The Belgian midfielder, who netted the winning goal for Leicester in the 2021 FA Cup final, demonstrated textbook technique with his strike.

Buendia doubled the advantage in first-half stoppage time, bending an effort from 18 yards beyond goalkeeper Noah Atubolu and into the top corner.

The German side had barely created an opportunity in the opening 41 minutes before Villa's devastating double blow.

Rogers completed the scoring just before the hour mark, sliding in at the near post to convert Buendia's cross.

Amadou Onana struck the woodwork and Buendia spurned a chance for a fourth, though Villa's superiority was already beyond question.

Striker Ollie Watkins praised his teammates' display in his post-match interview with TNT Sports: "To perform like that was unbelievable. We controlled the game and punished them."

Watkins highlighted the importance of set-piece coach Austin MacPhee's work, noting how crucial dead-ball situations can prove in finals.

"Unai was really calm in the build-up, sometimes he's a bit anxious in the league. That set the tone," he added.

Goalscorer Rogers told TNT Sports: "It's a great moment for the club. We'll go down in history."

The forward revealed Emery had repeatedly urged him to arrive in the penalty area more frequently, making his close-range finish particularly satisfying.

Tielemans reflected on a campaign of fluctuating fortunes: "It's been a season of ups and downs - we started so bad, our standards were poor. But we turned things around, credit to the players and staff."

Emery inherited a side languishing just three points above the relegation zone when he replaced Steven Gerrard in November 2022.

His meticulous work over three and a half years has transformed Villa into regular top-five challengers and now European champions once more.

The victory also secures Champions League football for next season, with Villa having already guaranteed a top-five Premier League finish.

Nine members of the legendary 1982 European Cup-winning squad attended the final in Istanbul to witness the club's return to continental glory.

Among those celebrating at the final whistle was Villa supporter Prince William, who watched his team claim major silverware for the first time in 30 years.

Captain John McGinn controlled proceedings in midfield throughout as Freiburg rarely threatened.
