DARREN STAPLES / Getty Images Share articleAston Villa have confirmed the North Stand of Villa Park will be shut for the entirety of the 2026-27 season as part of the club’s plan to expand the stadium. Villa’s vision has long been to create a 50,000-plus capacity stadium, increasing the maximum crowd size by 8,000 in time for Euro 2028. To meet that target, it is felt work would have to begin this summer at the latest. The North Stand, behind one of the goals and opposite the famous Holte End, is integral to the redevelopment, planning to sanction plans to house more than 12,000 spectators there. Incremental additions to the three other sides of the ground will lead to the targeted capacity and, longer-term, to a 52,500-seat venue. The Athletic has seen copies of redevelopment proposals, which show a higher overall structure and seating in the upper tier of the North Stand than currently exists, with a redesigned lower tier also creating additional capacity. The new North Stand will wrap around into the neighbouring main Trinity Stand. Initial work started during the recent March international break. Expanding Villa Park has been a bone of contention for several years. Previous plans, initiated by former chief executive Christian Purslow, would have seen the North Stand demolished over two seasons. After Purslow’s departure, Unai Emery’s football department were keen to avoid this, with Champions League qualification secured in the 2023-24 campaign and a desire for all four sides of Villa Park maintained. A new plan was drawn up, with the intention for the North Stand not to reduce in capacity at any stage, instead wrapping into the Trinity Stand, with a “superstructure steelwork” fortifying the larger North Stand. Tuesday’s announcement, however, has changed those plans again, with existing season-ticket holders offered alternative seats elsewhere. A club statement read: “This decision has been taken following extensive planning and assessment, and reflects the club’s commitment to minimising disruption for supporters while delivering meaningful improvements to both the fan and footballing experience at Villa Park. The new, accelerated plan for the works also incorporates operational efficiencies, which will lead to significant cost savings and a shorter timeline.” Francesco Calvo, President of Business Operations at Villa, added: “Temporarily reducing Villa Park’s capacity is not a decision we take lightly. However, it is the right decision and one that we have made with our supporters and the long-term future of the Club at the heart of our thinking. By completing the redevelopment in one season, we reduce disruption, improve the Villa Park experience more quickly and ensure we are investing responsibly while remaining compliant with financial regulations.” Spot the pattern.
