Young joined Ipswich Town last summer and confirmed in a statement that Saturday’s Championship fixture against Queens Park Rangers will be the final match of his professional career, should Kieran McKenna’s side secure automatic promotion to the Premier League and avoid the play-offs. The versatile full-back’s senior career has spanned 23 years, in which time he has made 765 club appearances and scored 88 goal across spells with Watford, Aston Villa, Manchester United, Inter and Everton. “I am incredibly proud and fortunate to have achieved everything I have during my career,” Young said in an Ipswich press release. “It’s not too often you sit and think about this while you are still in the game, but I have lived my dream during the last 23 years. It’s now time for some reflection on what I’ve been able to achieve and the next few weeks and months will be when I decide what I am going to do next.” From Sefton Road to Vicarage Road to Villa Park to Wembley to Old Trafford to San Siro back to Villa Park to Goodison Park and finally to Portman Road. He was part of the side that won promotion to the Premier League in 2006. He joined Aston Villa in 2007 and made his senior England debut during his time at Villa Park, in addition to winning the PFA Young Player of the Year award in 2009. Young moved to Manchester United in 2011 and spent eight-and-a-half years at Old Trafford, winning the Premier League, FA Cup, and Europa League. He also won 39 England caps between 2007 and 2018 and was part of Gareth Southgate’s side that reached the 2018 World Cup semi-final stage. Initially a winger before dropping into a full-back role later in his career, Young won Serie A with Inter in 2021 during an 18-month spell in Italy, before returning to the Premier League for a second stint with Villa, followed by two years at Everton. He has made 15 appearances in all competitions for Ipswich this season but has not featured since suffering a hip injury in January. “My full focus is on Saturday and helping this club achieve our goal, which is promotion back to the Premier League,” Young added.
