Patrick Smith / Getty Images Share article2The Athletics will be without Jacob Wilson for a while, as the American League’s starting shortstop in the 2025 All-Star game was placed on the 10-day injured list with a left shoulder subluxation. As part of a flurry of moves, the A’s also recalled outfielder Henry Bolte, who recently went on an historic run in Triple A with hits in 12 consecutive at-bats. Wilson was injured on Sunday in the A’s 2-1 loss to the Baltimore Orioles when he dove for a groundball up the middle in the fifth inning. He grabbed his left shoulder and immediately left the game. Wilson, who finished as runner-up behind his teammate Nick Kurtz for the AL Rookie of the Year award last year, signed a seven-year, $70 million extension with the A’s during the offseason. He hit .311/.355/.444 in 125 games last season but had seen his production drop this year. At the time of the injury, he was batting .292/.311/.398. Still one of the best in the league at avoiding strikeouts, Wilson’s strikeout rate had jumped from 7.5 percent last year to 11.9 percent. He was showing significant improvement defensively, however, with 5 Outs Above Average at short, according to Statcast. The A’s don’t have a lot of depth at shortstop behind Wilson. Darell Hernaiz took over for Wilson at short on Sunday and was the only other natural shortstop on the A’s roster with Max Muncy currently on the injured list with a broken left hand. There is no timetable for Wilson’s return. On Tuesday, the A’s promoted Michael Stefanic from Triple-A Las Vegas, optioning infielder Brett Harris. Stefanic has played just one MLB game at shortstop but has 90 games of experience there in the minor leagues. Top A’s prospect Leo De Vries is a shortstop, but the 19-year-old has only 55 games of experience at the Double-A level and has been struggling in May after a hot start to the Texas League season. The A’s began the season with veteran Andy Ibañez — a natural shortstop — on the roster as middle infield depth but designated him for assignment on April 26. Ibañez was DFA’d by the Mets on Tuesday and could be a target for the A’s if they look for additional shortstop depth. While De Vries isn’t joining the A’s roster, another top prospect is: outfielder Henry Bolte. A native of Palo Alto, Calif., Bolte has been one of the hottest hitters in Triple A over the past few weeks. Over the weekend, he ended an historic stretch during which he recorded 12 hits in 12 consecutive at-bats. He had four doubles, a triple and four home runs among those 12 hits. A 2022 second-round pick out of Palo Alto High School, Bolte, 22, has moved steadily through the A’s system since turning pro. He reached Triple A at the end of last year and was added to the A’s 40-man roster during the offseason. This spring, he hit .348/.418/.658 with 12 homers and 17 stolen bases in 37 games for Las Vegas. Strikeouts have been an issue for Bolte throughout his professional career, but he has cut his K-rate from 29 percent in 2025 to 22 percent this season. An excellent athlete with power and speed, Bolte is an above-average defender who can play all three outfield spots. With starting center fielder Denzel Clarke on the injured list, the A’s had been using converted infielder Zack Gelof in center frequently. Now with Wilson out of the lineup, Gelof may play more third base, leaving an opening in the outfield for Bolte. To make room for Stefanic on the 40-man roster, the A’s designated right-hander Eduarniel Núñez for assignment. They also announced that catcher Austin Wynns had cleared waivers and was released.
