Arsenal have donated socks to donkeys to help protect their legs against infection this summer.

Redwings Horse Sanctuary described the delivery to its Caldecott location in Norfolk as "one of the more unusual donations".

Nicola Knight, who works at the sanctuary, said: "Professional football socks, which these days are often footless by design, can be invaluable - they're a game changer, you might say.

"Only the best for our donkeys."

Jenny Herod, who is part of the charity, said the club got in touch with Redwings and explained the benefits of the socks.

She said: "In the summer, flies take a fancy to our donkeys' legs and can cause a lot of pain and scabs.

"The socks help to protect them and keep them healthy."

The legwear helps to hold bandages in place and hold their hair back while they get their feet trimmed.

Knight suggested it could have come from Arsenal frontman Kai Havertz, who has helped and rescued donkeys in the past.

Havertz previously had a donkey named after him at a sanctuary in Sidmouth.

The German described the animals as "incredible" and has openly expressed his support for and love of the foals.

He said: "I have followed the work of The Donkey Sanctuary for some time, so when they got in touch to say they'd like to name a foal after me, I was delighted.

"Donkeys are such incredible animals, and I am very happy to give my name so this little donkey can help raise awareness of the importance of good donkey welfare, here and all around the world."

Marianne Steele, CEO of The Donkey Sanctuary, said: "Kai has proved to be a real champion of donkeys in every sense of the word.

"We are so pleased to have the opportunity to name our new foal after him and hope he will continue to inspire people to think about donkeys differently."

Kai Havertz

Havertz scored Arsenal's opening goal last weekend in the Champions League final against PSG, with a stunning strike in the first six minutes.

PSG fought their way back into the contest, drawing the game 1-1 and winning on penalties.

Havertz previously won the Champions League during his tenure at Chelsea in west London.

Once again, the German scored in the final and won the competition as the Blues saw out a 1-0 win against Manchester City in 2021.
