When we asked last week for your biggest surprises of baseball’s first month, we had yet to hear the news that longtime Yankees play-by-play man John Sterling had died.A lot of us who contribute to the mailbag — including myself and some of the people behind the scenes — knew John, and to know John Sterling was to adore him and roll your eyes at him and admire him and tell stories about him and be forever grateful that you got to spend time with a man so uniquely himself.
