Knox, 39, was twice convicted and twice cleared of the 2007 murder before Italy's Supreme Court acquitted her for good in 2015. The mother-of-two is now bringing the ordeal to the stage in a new stand-up show, reportedly titled Cartwheel, which she hopes will help her own children understand what happened to her. But the Kercher family's lawyer, Francesco Maresca, has branded the show 'offensive and deplorable', telling the Scottish Sun on Sunday he had 'lost all hope' Knox could comprehend their feelings. Knox was living with the British student in Perugia when Kercher, 21, was found dead in the flat they shared in November 2007, having been sexually assaulted and stabbed to death. She and her then-boyfriend, Raffaele Sollecito, were convicted of the murder in 2009 and jailed, before being freed on appeal two years later. A third defendant, Rudy Guede, was separately convicted of the killing in 2008. Maresca said Knox's continued references to the case had prevented any reconciliation between her and Kercher's relatives, adding that her behaviour had 'always been over the top and extremely excessive'. She added: 'I think that she would appreciate the show, because it grapples with what it means to be a young woman, and it's honest. Would she have found it funny? Yeah, I think so. I mean, it is funny!' Knox revealed she had initially planned a show about motherhood until friends persuaded her the case could not be avoided. 'They said, 'Dude, this is a standard comedic thing. You've gotta address the elephant in the room,' she said. She insisted no subject was off-limits in comedy, but drew a distinction over her friend's death. 'I don't joke about Meredith's death,' she said. 'I joke a lot about how I was vilified, but I don't joke about her murder. That's just a line for me. I set red lines for myself that other comedians don't. I've had other comedians pitch me jokes that I just would not do.' It is the latest in a string of projects Knox has built around the case since her acquittal, including two memoirs, several podcasts and a Hulu drama, The Twisted Tale Of Amanda Knox, which she executive-produced. That series, released last year, prompted a similar backlash from the Kercher family, with Maresca telling Newsweek at the time that neither he nor the family had been 'pleased with the initiatives Amanda Knox has undertaken over the years'.
