They are a safe space for those of us who like a quiet cup of tea or a gentle browse among the blooms. As part of our research into the best garden furniture stores, we asked the Telegraph Recommended Community to share their favourite garden centres. They spoke just as fondly about the memories they have made as the plants they have purchased. Here’s what they had to say. Small is best Independent garden centres are preferred by Telegraph readers Arthur, 87, from the South East, says he “always seeks out non-chain centres”, as “they are full of knowledgeable staff and plants they know how to care for”. He recommends Foxley Road Nurseries in Malmesbury but says: “Tea rooms and attractions aren’t necessary, although a cuppa can be welcome”. Liz, 60, from the East Midlands, holds a similar view. She favours Earthed Up!, a small independent nursery at Belper Lane End in Derbyshire. There’s no café or gifts, “just the most wonderful range of herbs and edible plants that you don’t see anywhere else”. For others, like reader Bishan, 33, from the West Midlands, there’s not always one particular garden centre that stands out; it’s more about visiting different places and browsing for new ideas. For him, having “unique, organic, peat-free plants and eco-friendly packaging is what makes a garden centre special”. “Garden centres are great as beauty spots; they are always in bloom and a visit can really make one’s day,” according to reader Theofanis, 43, especially when attending with a loved one. “I always go there with my partner, never alone,” he says. His favourite is Edwins Garden Centre in Woking, Surrey: “I love how it is set up, how well-taken care of their plants look and how I can find some great deals.” Mark, 62, describes how garden centres can leave a lasting impression. Not only are the staff “friendly and very knowledgeable” at his local, but “the plants are always well looked-after and healthy, the choice is also great”. Most profound are “all the perennial plants I have got there are still doing well, some of which bring back memories of planting them with my children when they were much younger”. Christmas at the garden centre Garden centres often have seasonal displays Throughout the year, seasonal displays present an opportunity to return, especially at Christmas time. These readers recall their most memorable visits. “I love Christmas at Otter Garden Centre,” says Kimberley, 67, from the South West. “They have lots of decorations to buy but also huge displays with moving reindeer and 6ft high singing Santas.” A highlight for Kimberley is their annual Christmas launch evening, where customers are invited for free mince pies, prosecco and mulled wine. “There’s entertainment with carol singers, bell ringers and staff dressed up in Christmas costumes. They collect for charity too and offer vouchers for discounts on selected products,” she explains. “It’s a great way to start the festive season.” Bryan, 86, from the South East, has been a customer of Henry Street Garden Centre in Arborfield, Berkshire for decades: “My wife and I often used to browse and purchase plants and garden furniture.” But his favourite memory was watching his wife’s “delight at their incredible Christmas displays of decorations. Lights, live reindeer even and the wonderful family atmosphere all around you,” he describes. “It’s still a magical place for me where I can get close to her memory.” For Mary, 79, from the South East, “a garden centre is special if the plants are in season and healthy and there is great choice of both plants and compost”. She nominates family-run Grovewell Garden Centres at Swingfield near Folkestone, which has three other branches based in Kent. Not only are their plants “always beautifully displayed”, she explains, they have “an amazing choice of garden supplies, cards and gifts, as well as a nice little coffee shop”. Her favourite memory, however, was at Christmas time a few years ago. “They have a couple of beautiful, nodding and interacting reindeer with a sofa in front of them. We were admiring them and an older guy on the staff asked if we wanted a photo taken, which was so sweet of him.” “He took my husband’s phone and got a really happy little snap of us and the reindeer, which our girls thought was hilarious,” she says. “Service with a smile.” Community spirit Readers visit local garden centres for community For many, the perfect garden centre offers far more than plants alone, but a sense of community. Whether meeting friends over coffee, browsing for gifts or attending an event, readers say it is the whole experience that keeps them coming back. Jay, 48, from the West Midlands, perfectly sums up this sentiment, as he “always feels happy and relaxed” after visiting his favourite garden centre, Dobbies. “It is a nice and peaceful place to visit,” he says. “There are many lovely plants, flowers and garden items to look at. I enjoy walking around, getting ideas for the garden and seeing colourful seasonal flowers.” It’s not just for shopping, Jay adds: “It is a place where you can spend a quiet afternoon, have a cup of tea and enjoy time with family.” Speaking of tea, reader Mike, 79, from the North East, says Heighley Gate Garden Centre near Morpeth, Northumberland, has been his “go-to” for garden products, having seen it develop over the last 50 years. Most notably, “it provided the space and the surface for [his] wife when she was recovering from her knee replacement operations”. “We are usually there at least once per week for refreshments,” he adds. Deborah, 65, from the East of England, values Scotsdales Garden in Great Shelford, Cambridge, as she can “pop along for help whenever needed and there’s no pressure to buy”. She recalls taking her “dodgy sprinkler” to the store and “someone testing it on the hose they had set up”. The recent addition of a restaurant has created “a good place to meet friends, whether for tea or coffee or for meals”, and an opportunity to “sit and chat with people” when events are held nearby. Events also provide an opportunity to learn new skills for John, 39, from London. He favours Frosts Garden Centre “because they offer lots of gardening courses and activities, which have really sparked [his] interest in gardening”. New discoveries can also make big impressions. Kerrie, 60, from the East Midlands, found Wentworth Garden Centre in Yorkshire: “It’s large but has lots of separate sections and is beautifully laid out.
