By MATT JONES, SENIOR NEWS REPORTER, AUSTRALIA Published: 10:12, 9 May 2026 | Updated: 10:12, 9 May 2026 One of the men allegedly behind the Bondi Beach massacre is now reportedly speaking to a female pen pal while locked up. Naveed Akram, who is currently behind bars at Goulburn's Supermax prison, has allegedly been sent at least one letter from a female inmate at a women's jail, The Sunday Telegraph reported. The contents of the letter are not believed to be romantic, a source told the publication.  Akram, 24, remains behind bars after he allegedly opened fire on a crowd of people celebrating Hanukkah at Bondi Beach alongside his father, 50-year-old Sajid Akram, on December 14. The attack left 15 innocent people dead - including a 10-year-old girl - and dozens injured. Sajid was also killed. Prisoners detained in Supermax can send and receive letters with other inmates as long as they are not abusive, offensive, threatening, indecent or obscene. The letters written by high-risk inmates must be written in English, and are able to be opened and read by prison officers nominated by the jail governor. 'Inmates may send letters or parcels, and receive letters or parcels from, any other person, subject to consideration of any applicable legal orders restricting contact between certain individuals,' the Corrective Services NSW (CSNSW) policy reads. The news comes just days after Akram was hit with 19 new charges, six months after the shooting. The existing charges include committing a terrorist act, 15 counts of murder, and 40 charges of attempted murder over his alleged role in the massacre. But Akram has been hit with further charges while in custody, including ten counts of shooting with intent to murder and six counts of discharging a firearm with intent to resist arrest. Records reveal the additional charges were laid in April, ahead of a mention of the matter in Sydney's Downing Centre Local Court on Wednesday. He has not yet been required to enter pleas to any of the charges. Akram was visited by a Muslim chaplain while he was at Long Bay Hospital earlier this year and has requested and received a copy of the Koran. The Bondi terrorist attack was Australia's deadliest mass shooting since the Port Arthur massacre in 1996.
