A race as revered as the British Grand Prix deserves extra effort from the paddock, and it certainly looks like the grid hasn’t disappointed us for this year’s event, with plenty of teams and drivers taking the opportunity to celebrate their home race. With helmet collaborations, special home race suits, and landmark liveries, there are plenty of special designs to keep an eye on at Silverstone. Let’s take a look at all the eye-catching efforts for this year’s race weekend... Nothing hits like a home race for McLaren and, just weeks on from celebrating their 1000th GP start, the British team have another special livery for this weekend in Silverstone with a nod to their monumental landmark from just weeks ago. Whilst the livery may seem vastly different from their usual looks of recent times, there is a pretty compelling reason behind it. Inspired by their first-ever F1 car from 1966 – the McLaren M2B – the team has opted to switch papaya for crisp white and a splash of the British Racing Green on the nose. Prior to 1968, the colour of a car was strictly determined by the nationality of the team’s entrant with Great Britain donning the famous racing green as their colour. Whilst this is no longer a requirement, it feels right to see it return on McLaren in a perfect nod to their history. Not only do they sport a historic livery, but both Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri will have some striking new race suits in Silverstone. Gone is the papaya, replaced with a clean white to match the livery, with founder Bruce McLaren’s name embroidered on the back – a lovely touch from the Woking-based team. By the looks of things, this livery and race suit combo has gone down well with fans – so keep an eye out over the weekend for this vastly distinctive design. There’s no better way to celebrate a first-ever home race start as an F1 driver than with a special edition helmet, and Racing Bulls rookie Arvid Lindblad has absolutely nailed the assignment. Designed in collaboration with British-Indian artist Navinder Nangla, the young Brit’s unique helmet design was inspired by his path to F1. The lid is coated in heartwarming hand-drawn illustrations of his journey from his first step into motorsport at just three years old all the way up to scoring points on his F1 debut in Australia this season. Phrases that reflected Lindblad’s mindset during his journey so far – “Dream Big” and “My Path, My Way” – were graffitied on the top, whilst also paying homage to his mixed heritage with the British, Indian and Swedish flags drawn at the bottom of the lid. Helmet designer Nangla praised Lindblad's enthusiasm and creativity when working together on the design of this sepcial lid, as he described the process as a genuine collaboration from start to finish, with plenty of "conversations, text messages, phone calls, going back and forth to get it right, because it's such a special moment." For Nangla, who has championed both his dyslexia and Indian heritage throughout his career in fashion and art, this pairing seemed a natural fit for a project rooted also in those themes – particularly as Lindblad shares both. Deliberately drawing with his wrong hand to keep the lines of the drawings spontaneous and child-like, the idea was to create something less polished and more authentic to the driver. "It's a radical design, it's punk in F1," Nangla said. "I want to push the boundaries and show the next gen what's possible." Having collected points at the previous three Grands Prix, Lindblad will be hoping this home race and special helmet will provide more positive memories for the 18-year-old – after all, there’s no special edition home race helmet quite like your first! For Lewis Hamilton, Silverstone is so much more than a home race. He has won the British Grand Prix a record-breaking nine times – the most wins at a single circuit by any driver ever. So of course, it would be amiss for the Brit to not commemorate his relationship with the race in some way. When Hamilton first joined Ferrari last season, the Brit reverted back to his iconic yellow helmet from his McLaren and Mercedes days. But he admitted that this clashed with the racing red Ferrari caps that the Maranello team wear, so for his home race he will incorporate the yellow into more features of his racing attire – his gloves, his boots, and of course, the cap. It’s a lovely full-circle moment for Hamilton to celebrate his racing heritage from over the years, and there will no doubt be thousands of yellow caps in the stands this weekend. Another team celebrating their home race at the British Grand Prix is Williams, who have opted for a more subtle change to their usual livery for the weekend. With glittering splashes of the Union Jack colours on either side of the nose cone and chassis of the FW48, Alex Albon and Carlos Sainz will wear unique race suits with a similar design, whilst the trackside team will additionally show off their one-off takeover kits. He'll already be donning the special livery and race suit for his teams’ home race, but the excitement doesn’t stop there for Carlos Sainz. Being the location of his maiden win in 2022, Silverstone is a special place for the Williams man – so it’s not a surprise that he chose this race weekend to debut his brand-new helmet design. In a James Bond-esque style announcement video, the Spaniard revealed the red-dominated lid with his new 55 logo on to boot. Don’t worry though Sainz fans, the lid still displays his famous chilly right on top! It might be a British race weekend, but the American teams have plenty to get excited about too. The event takes place over the 4th of July weekend – which will mark America’s 250th birthday – and Cadillac have found this the perfect opportunity to pay tribute to their American roots. Their usual black and white livery has been substituted with American red, white and blue stars and stripes coating the car. The colour scheme is also set to feature across the garage dressing and driver helmets, with special edition Tommy Hilfiger team kit and merch also being released ahead of the weekend. In yet another helmet masterpiece designed by his partner Tiffany Cromwell, Valtteri Bottas is going full American mode this 4th of July weekend. In addition to the special livery and team kit, the Finn is honouring his team's heritage on Independence Day in the United States with a helmet design fit for a patriot. The design centres around the bold colours of the American flag, with stars and stripes coated around the whole helmet, along with the national symbol – the bald eagle. Bottas also makes a personal twist to the helmet, changing the famous Route 66 element to Route 77 – and, of course, there's plenty of glitter to boot. Lance Stroll is no stranger to standout special edition helmets, and for his team's home race he’s bringing out yet another masterpiece. In collaboration with Aston Martin’s sponsor Maaden, Stroll’s helmet is inspired by patina – a protective layer that naturally develops on the surface of materials such as copper and bronze – that is said to symbolise the transformation of raw materials into advanced technology such as race cars. The design is similar to that of the Aston Martin liveries from the Monaco Grand Prix weekend, and with the British Racing Green complementing the patina wonderfully, we think it will positively glow under the Silverstone sun. Because one special helmet wasn't enough, Piastri announced his plans to run not two but three special edition helmets this British Grand Prix weekend. In collaboration with artists Nick Thomm, J. Demsky, and David Nott, the Australian will be running a different helmet each day across the race weekend. The three designs are truly distinct from one another. On Friday, Piastri will wear Demsky's design, which utilises creative line distortion – similar to that of an Amsler eye test – which exudes a futuristic feel. On Saturday, it is Thomm's turn, with the reds and purples covering the helmet in a thermal gradient style. Finally, for the Grand Prix on Sunday, Piastri will wear Nott's eye-catching design – the sweeping arcs of red, orange, yellow, blue, and purple make it seem like a sunset in motion. It's certainly the perfect design to see Piastri cross the chequered flag after a busy weekend. Another home hero, Haas' Ollie Bearman, marks his home race with a special edition helmet – with an epic reveal on the fan stage on Friday morning. Think Union Jack meets racing stripes, but with a cute addition on the top of the lid – Bearman's racing mascot Obbie the bear. Designed with artist David Johnson, the adorable mascot also appears on the Brit's special British GP merch – and we're sure he'll serve as a lucky charm for Bearman during his home race.
