Published: 01:51, 24 August 2026 | Updated: 01:51, 24 August 2026 Aldi shoppers will soon see less items on shelves as the discount supermarket chain hopes to improve profits. Around 20 per cent of Aldi's product range, including from its famous weekly 'special buys', will be slashed as the supermarket giant loses ground against rivals Woolworths and Coles. While it's not been confirmed what products will be targeted in the latest cut, special buy items like kids' toys, kitchen appliances and cultural food range could be on the chopping block. Aldi chief commercial officer Jordan Lack told the AFR that the supermarket giant has been able to keep prices lower by limiting the number of products they sell. 'We continually review our range to ensure it reflects what customers value most. By reducing complexity and concentrating on the products families buy every week, we can operate more efficiently and invest those savings directly back to customers through lower prices,' Lack said. 'This disciplined approach is a key part of how Aldi delivers high-quality products at unbeatable value. In the last month alone, we have made significant permanent price reductions across our ... meat range,' he said. It comes as Aldi shoppers have moved away from the discount store in recent months, despite it being comparatively cheaper than the country's two biggest supermarkets. Barrenjoey analyst Tom Kierath said Aldi had shifted away from stocking well-known brands which hampered its ability to cut through with customers. Aldi shoppers will soon see less items on shelves as the supermarket fights to stay profitable Around 20 per cent of Aldi's product range is expected to be slashed  Special buy items like kids' toys, kitchen appliances and cultural food range could be on the chopping block 'Our July consumer survey shows falling perceptions of Aldi and IGA compared with Coles and Woolworths, which have remained stable. Our survey shows a pullback from value-seeking, with consumers buying fewer private-label products, fewer items on promotion and less from discounters,' Kierath said. In a recent note to clients, investment bank JPMorgan said Coles and Woolworths were 9.4 per cent and 9.2 per cent more expensive than Aldi last month. 'The sequential premium uplift was driven by Aldi's price cuts across cheese and deli items,' JPMorgan's Bryan Raymond said. 'The key focus would be whether Coles and Woolworths follow Aldi's price move down in cheese; and whether this is a signal of future Aldi price moves across other high-volume grocery categories.' Despite Aldi's sales rising to $13.94 billion last year, its profits fell by almost 20 per cent to $337.4 million, according to the supermarket's filings with the corporate regulator. Woolworths and Coles are expected to report their full-year financial results this week. Daily Mail Australia has contacted Aldi for comment.
