The crash happened around midday on Thursday at the Cape Newenham Long Range Radar Site Airport, about 725 km west of Anchorage. The National Transportation Safety Board said the pilots were unable to see the runway and had to rely entirely on instruments as they tried to land. The two pilots and six passengers who died were not immediately identified, though the US Army Corps of Engineers said two of its employees were among those killed. The airport is a private military site managed by the Pacific Air Forces Regional Support Center. It is part of a network of remote radar sites that tracks aircraft operating in Alaska's airspace and along its borders, according to a statement from Alaskan Command. The radar site was built in the 1950s as part of a network meant to provide early warning of a missile attack by the Soviet Union. It now monitors the skies off the coast in the direction of Russia, North Korea and China.
