After journalist Amal Khalil's death, activists call to cancel Israel-Lebanon meeting

ALBAWABA - Lebanese journalist Amal Khalil was killed in an Israeli strike on a house in the southern village of al-Tiri, local media reported.

The daily Al-Akhbar newspaper, which Amal worked for, said its reporter was killed in an Israeli airstrike on a house in southern Lebanon where she had taken cover.

According to Al-Akhbar, Amal Khalil was killed while reporting on the Israel-Hezbollah war. Rescue workers pulled her body from under the rubble hours after the strike by the Israeli army.

She died along with her colleague Zeinab Faraj. The Lebanese health ministry said the first attack killed two people. A second strike then hit the house in al-Tiri, where Khalil and Faraj were trying to hide.

After journalist Amal Khalil's death, calls to cancel Israel-Lebanon meeting:

Today, the second round of direct talks between Israeli and Lebanese officials is scheduled to be held in Washington on extending the ceasefire that went into effect last Friday. The meeting is set to be held today at 4 p.m. Washington time.

Some activists on social media are calling on Lebanese authorities to cancel the meeting with Israel following the killing of journalist Amal Khalil, who has been reporting in the south of Lebanon since 2006 for al-Akhbar newspaper.

One wrote on X, "Tomorrow, the South bids farewell to the martyr Amal Khalil.  
Tomorrow, the authority of shame meets the killers of Amal Khalil."

Another said, "How did we reach a time when we have to seek the killer's permission to save the victim instead of holding him accountable? It is our land, but today's decision is in the hands of those who occupy it."

On the other hand, some said that the death of Amal Khalil should be a push to disarm Hezbollah and end clashes with Israel and prevent further deaths of civilians.

Israel has killed nine journalists in Lebanon since the start of 2026. In addition, at least 2,300 people have been killed and more than 1 million displaced since the latest Israel-Hezbollah war erupted on March 2.
