Adorable 7-month-old baby dies in car fire after dad popped back into house as vehicle tragically burst into flames

Published: 19:40, 23 July 2026 | Updated: 19:52, 23 July 2026 A seven-month-old baby died after the only working vehicle his family had burst into flames outside their Washington home while his father had briefly stepped away, leaving loved ones desperately trying to save him. Bodhi died after a Ford F-350 caught fire outside his family's Thurston County home at about 12.10pm Tuesday, per local police. Despite frantic rescue attempts by his father, neighbors and first responders, the infant remained trapped in his car seat. His mother, Jasmine Whittaker, revealed on Facebook that the family had been using her vehicle after her partner Brandon Shue's truck broke down the previous day. Whittaker said Shue, a stay-at-home father with heart failure after suffering blood clots in his lungs, had driven her to work that morning before returning home to be with their children. 'My partner made every attempt to get our son out, and so did many others. The fire spread too fast,' she wrote. 'That man did everything he could. From his shirt melting to his skin to the soot caked in his mouth, he never gave up. As any parent would do anything for their child, he did.' She was already at work when Shue called with the devastating news. 'During the brief phone call I had with my partner, I could hear the sheer terror in his voice when he told me they couldn't get Bodhi out.' I had no idea that would be the last time I would ever see my baby boy,' she added. According to investigators, Shue had been preparing to leave the family's home with three children when he briefly stepped away from the running car. A short time later, smoke began filling the cabin. Whittaker's 12-year-old sister removed Bodhi's two-year-old sibling from the truck before running to alert Shue. By the time they returned, the vehicle was completely engulfed in flames. Deputies and firefighters rushed to the scene after receiving reports that an infant remained trapped inside the burning vehicle.  Authorities said Shue, nearby residents and emergency personnel all tried to rescue Bodhi, while several people suffered burn injuries during the frantic effort.  Shue, the injured civilians and the children were later taken to hospital for medical evaluation and treatment. Detective Sergeant Micky Hamilton told KING 5 that Shue initially tried to extinguish the blaze with a garden hose, but the flames spread too quickly. 'Unfortunately, the fire happened so fast, baby was strapped into a car seat and they weren't able to get the infant out in time,' Hamilton said. Jasmine Whittaker said she received a frantic phone call from partner Brandon Shue while she was at work, telling her they could not save their son from the burning truck The fire began in the Ford F-350 while it was parked on private property and was not related to a crash, investigators said. Authorities have not yet determined what sparked the blaze. 'We don't expect anything criminal is involved, but anytime you have the death of a child we want to answer as many questions as we possibly can about what happened and what occurred,' Hamilton said. The Thurston County Sheriff's Office is investigating alongside Tumwater fire investigators, while the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives has assigned two specialists in vehicle fire investigations to assist. Sheriff Derek Sanders later wrote on social media that he was 'absolutely sick to my stomach' after seeing the scene.  He said he was deeply sorry for the family and the first responders, and thanked the agency's chaplains for supporting both Bodhi's loved ones and emergency personnel. In her Facebook post, Whittaker said she and Shue had intentionally planned to have their two children close in age so they 'would always have a best friend.' She said they chose the name Bodhi because one of its meanings is 'enlightenment - to wake up, to know.' The family chose the name Bodhi as it means 'enlightenment, to wake, to know,' his mom said 'The first time we looked into Bodhi's eyes, we knew he had so much wisdom, strength, and love in his heart,' she wrote. 'And he did.' She described him as 'the easiest-going, happiest, most loving little boy who could make anyone laugh.' 'Food was the way to his heart, and it always seemed to find its way from his sister's plate over to him so he could have a taste,' she wrote. 'His laugh was contagious, and there was never a morning he woke up without a smile on his face when he saw you.' Whittaker also revealed that her younger sister lives with the family after losing both her mother and three-month-old sister in a horrific car crash less than a year ago. 'She is so strong and saved a life and made every attempt to save another,' Whittaker wrote. Deputies, firefighters, neighbors and Bodhi's father all attempted to rescue the infant from the burning pickup, while several people suffered burn injuries during the frantic effort She said the tragedy has left an unimaginable burden on Shue. 'The pain he carries is indescribable. Even after first responders arrived awaiting a firetruck, he kept talking to our boy and never left his side,' she wrote. Whittaker added: 'This isn't a nightmare you wake up from.' She thanked supporters, writing: 'We see the love and support from our community, and we are endlessly grateful. Thank you for standing beside our family during the hardest time of our lives.' The family has since launched a GoFundMe campaign to help cover Bodhi's funeral expenses, grief counseling for Whittaker, Shue, their two-year-old daughter and Whittaker's younger sister, as well as lost wages. It has raised almost $18,000 as of Thursday afternoon.  Neighbor Margaret Hoffman, who has lived in the rural area her entire life, said the large emergency response immediately signaled that something was terribly wrong. 'Yesterday we saw two cop cars go down the road and that's pretty unusual,' she told KING 5. 'Then I think it was three more cop cars flew down and then a fire truck flew down and that's when we really knew something was going on.' Hoffman said she also heard what sounded like a small explosion. The family's 12-year-old removed Bodhi's two-year-old sister from the smoke-filled truck before alerting adults as the vehicle became engulfed in flames, investigators said 'We heard sort of a boom, too - it wasn't like super loud but you could hear it, like pop it in your ears.' She added: 'Everybody has been pretty devastated about the whole thing. I can't imagine what the family is going through right now - absolutely the worst thing you can imagine.' Hamilton said the tragedy had weighed heavily on everyone who responded. 'It's always harder when it involves a child,' he said. 'I think from the firefighters to the deputies nobody wants to see anything like this happen to a child.' The investigation into what caused the fire remains ongoing.
