Activists Call for Boycott of Kendji Girac’s Concerts in Morocco
Rabat – Calls for a boycott have emerged in Morocco ahead of upcoming concerts by French singer Kendji Girac, scheduled to take place later in April in Rabat and Casablanca as part of “The Unforgettable Show.”
The Moroccan Campaign for Academic and Cultural Boycott (MACBI), along with social media users, has urged the public and event organizers to cancel the shows, citing what it describes as the artist’s “links to Israel.”
In a public statement and a letter addressed to the production company Kenza Cheddadi and concert organizers, MACBI argued that inviting the singer is a “blatant violation,” referencing his past collaborations with Israeli artists, performances in Tel Aviv, and media statements it interprets as supportive of Israel.
The campaign further stated that cultural platforms should not be separated from political contexts, insisting that organizers bear an “ethical responsibility” in their selection of performers.
Echoing the campaign’s position, online users have also criticized the decision to host the singer, arguing that it disregards the broader political and historical context surrounding Israel’s bloody genocide on Gaza. MACBI has called for the withdrawal of the invitation and warned that it may mobilize a formal boycott campaign and organize peaceful protests if the concerts proceed as planned.
The group also cited the International Court of Justice advisory opinion issued on July 19 of 2024, as well as a United Nations General Assembly resolution adopted on September 18 of 2024, arguing that such measures legitimize boycott actions as a form of ethical and legal pressure.
