The move aims to support early diagnosis and timely intervention, giving children and families access to services within an integrated healthcare system. Under the new system, all designated centres must provide an initial assessment within 14 days of receiving a referral or booking. Appointments can be made directly by parents or through referrals from nurseries, schools, healthcare providers and programmes such as the “Well-Child” initiative. Officials said the step will help reduce waiting times and improve early detection of developmental conditions. The centres will follow a unified model that connects healthcare, education and community services to support children and their families throughout the care journey. Fayeza Al Yafei, Executive Director of the Healthcare Quality Sector at DoH, said the initiative sets a clear standard for autism diagnosis and care across the emirate. She added that improving access to early assessments helps families better understand the care pathway and supports better long-term outcomes for children. The designated centres are spread across the emirate to ensure wider access. In Abu Dhabi, the centres include the American Centre for Psychiatry and Neurology, Burjeel Medical City, NMC Mowj Child Development Centre and Sakina for Children. In Al Ain, centres include Burjeel Royal Hospital, the American Centre for Psychiatry and Neurology and Sakina for Children. In Al Dhafra, services are available at Al Dhannah Hospital. The centres were selected through a detailed evaluation process that reviewed governance, staff capability, clinical processes, facilities and community engagement. They will operate in line with DoH’s ASD care standards, which cover early screening, diagnosis, personalised care plans and ongoing follow-up. Officials said the approach ensures consistent quality of care across all centres. Authorities said the initiative supports early intervention and helps improve developmental outcomes for children. It also reflects wider efforts to strengthen healthcare services, promote inclusion and support People of Determination across the emirate. DoH said the step is part of its ongoing work to build a healthcare system that focuses on prevention, early support and continuous care for all members of the community.
