AB üyesi ülkelerin liderlerine 2019-2024 arasında başkanlık eden Belçikalı siyasetçi Michel, "Türkiye, NATO’nun temel bir müttefiki, kilit bir göç ortağı, bir enerji koridoru, Avrupa’nın sınırında önemli bir savunma aktörü ve ciddi bir bölgesel güçtür." değerlendirmesinde bulundu. Michel, Avrupa’nın bu gerçeklikleri göz ardı etmemesi gerektiğini vurgulayarak "Avrupa, çifte standartlar uygulayarak ya da gerçekliği basitleştirerek güçlenmez." görüşünü paylaştı.
