Christian Petersen / Getty Images Share article1Giancarlo Stanton said he and his New York Yankees teammates have talked about the possibility of wearing an alternate road uniform for a few years now, and he supports the club officially adding a third jersey into the mix. “I would be a fan,” Stanton said before Wednesday’s game against the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park. The Athletic reported Wednesday morning that Yankees players have suggested the team wear its navy batting practice jerseys — which feature “New York” across the chest in gray letters and numbers with white trim and the Starr Insurance sleeve patch — during occasional road games. The batting practice jerseys have already been approved by MLB for in-game use, according to a league source, and could be deployed at any time once greenlighted by the Yankees. The Yankees have only two official jerseys: white with blue pinstripes at home and gray on the road. Stanton called the Yankees’ jerseys “the most iconic” in the sport, but acknowledged that change can sometimes be a good thing for the club. He noted how every MLB team, other than the Athletics, has a City Connect jersey. He also knows that not every Yankees fan would agree with a potential identity shift for the storied franchise. “I’m sure if we were to do it and we play well, then it’s OK,” Stanton said. “We don’t play well, it’s because of the jersey. Whatever works. We gotta play well regardless.” Aaron Judge would not say whether he supports the push for an alternate jersey, but he said that the club accepting a sponsorship from Starr Insurance to have its company name on their uniforms justifies bucking the status quo. “I’m all about tradition, but we’ve got a patch on our sleeves,” he said. Judge believes the Yankees will always wear their pinstripes at home and can’t see that changing. Stanton added that among the Yankees he’s spoken with, no player has come out against the possibility of a new uniform. “A lot of people would be OK with it, for sure,” Stanton said. “I don’t know each and every person. But who I’ve talked to, yeah they would be good with it.”  Yankees manager Aaron Boone told reporters before Wednesday’s game that he did not know whether anything was imminent in terms of adding another jersey, stating that his focus was on the Boston Red Sox and starting pitcher Ranger Suárez. The decision on whether to add an alternate jersey will ultimately be owner Hal Steinbrenner’s to make, and neither he nor the organization has officially commented yet. Spot the pattern.
