55 Santander and NatWest banks closing before May 28 starting Tuesday - full list

Customers of two of the country's biggest banks are preparing to say goodbye to their local branches as the financial institutions overhaul the way they provide their services. Both Santander and NatWest have said they are closing dozens of branches as people turn more towards online banking. Many of these will be gone by the end of May, with many more shutting their doors before the end of the summer. Santander will shut 40 branches before May 20, with the first of these closing on Tuesday, April 28. Making the announcement in January, the Spanish banking giant said it was closing a total of 44 branches, with the first four going that month. It also then confirmed a further 40 branches would close by the end of May, as a result of a growing number of customers opting to use online services. The bank revealed that 96% of all customer transactions are now conducted through digital platforms. NatWest, meanwhile is closing 15 of its branches across the country by the end of May. It will close a further 14 in June then five more by the end of September. Three are also due to close next year. It announced the move in January when it explained it was making the move and what it would mean for customers. It said most of its branches would be replaced by banking hubs where customers would be able to access face-to-face services. Writing on its website it said: "Banking has changed dramatically in recent years. There's more demand for mobile and online services, allowing you to benefit from a faster and easier way to bank. "We understand the closure of your local branch will bring some changes, and we want to make sure you are fully informed and supported every step of the way." It added more information was available on its closure guides on its website . The next wave of closures begins on Tuesday.
