2026 Laureus Awards: Yamal and PSG Among Big Winners in Madrid
At the 2026 Laureus World Sports Awards, held at the Palais de Cibeles in Madrid yesterday, Lamine Yamal and Paris Saint-Germain were two of the biggest winners, alongside tennis star Carlos Alcaraz.
The ceremony itself was hosted by tennis legend Novak Djokovic and the most decorated freestyle skier in Olympic history, Eileen Gu, one of the most successful and influential multi-disciplinary athletes of her generation.
Yamal was crowned World Young Sportsperson of the Year in what was the first edition of this newly created category. It’s his second consecutive Laureus award after being named Breakthrough of the Year in 2025 so that makes him the youngest athlete to ever win two Laureus World Sports Awards.
Alongside him, PSG were named World Team of the Year, an achievement following their first-ever UEFA Champions League title win in 2025. It’s also the first time a French club has received this distinction.

Celebrating excellence across sports
Tennis largely dominated the individual categories. The night’s top individual honor went to Alcaraz, who was named World Sportsman of the Year after a great 2025 season that included titles at Roland-Garros and the US Open, finishing the year as world number one and Aryna Sabalenka won the World Sportswoman of the Year, recognizing her dominant 2025 season where she held the world number 1 ranking, won the US Open, and reached three Grand Slam finals.
While football had a strong presence, the awards celebrated excellence across sports.
- Lando Norris: Breakthrough of the Year
- Rory McIlroy: Comeback of the Year
- Toni Kroos: Sporting Inspiration Award
- Nadia Comăneci: Lifetime Achievement Award.
- Gabriel Araujo: Sportsperson of the Year with a Disability
- Chloe Kim: World Action Sportsperson of the Year
- Fútbol Más: Sport for Good Award.
