After Round 2 of TNEA 2026, 1,06,583 seats remained vacant, with only around 41% of the total seats filled so far, according to an analysis of the counselling data. The third round is still to come, so the final vacancy figure will be lower. But the bigger story is the uneven distribution of demand. While several established government and private colleges have filled most of their seats, 167 engineering colleges have reportedly filled less than 10% of their seats, while 23 have recorded zero admissions after two rounds. The numbers suggest that this may not be a simple collapse in demand for engineering. Students are still competing heavily for established institutions and certain branches. CSE alone accounted for 17,124 admissions, followed by ECE with more than 12,000 and IT with 6,282, according to the reported Round 2 data. Some colleges are struggling to attract even a fraction of their sanctioned intake, while premier institutions have already filled almost all their seats. Computer-related courses dominate student choices, with CSE, ECE, IT and newer technology-focused programmes attracting much of the demand. Mechanical and some other traditional branches have comparatively weaker demand. Historical TNEA cutoff trends also show how sharply preferences have shifted. At leading institutions, CSE cutoffs have remained extremely high, with CEG's 2025 OC cutoff reported at 199.5 out of 200.
