Woman’s body found in public toilet near historic landmark as police launch probe into ‘unexplained death’
Thames Valley Police have launched an investigation after finding a woman's body in a public toilet.
The discovery was close to the famous Banbury Cross in Oxfordshire.
The body was found yesterday morning when officers arrived at the West Bar Street facilities at 8.20am.
Police immediately sealed off the area surrounding the toilets.
The facilities sit near the iconic 16-metre neo-Gothic monument in the heart of the market town.
Detectives are treating the death as unexplained whilst they work to establish the circumstances.
The deceased woman has not yet been identified.
A Thames Valley Police spokesman confirmed the circumstances of the discovery.
He said: "Officers attended the public toilets on West Bar Street, close to the Banbury Cross, and sadly found the body of a woman.
"We are still in the initial stages of this investigation, and the woman has not yet been identified.
"If anyone has any information regarding this unexplained death, please make contact with us on 101 quoting reference 43260255904."
The Banbury Cross stands prominently on a roundabout in the town centre.

It was constructed in 1859 to commemorate the marriage of Queen Victoria's eldest daughter.
The striking monument stands 16 metres tall and features distinctive neo-Gothic architectural styling.
The landmark holds a special place in British cultural heritage, having inspired the beloved children's nursery rhyme "Ride a cock-horse to Banbury Cross."
Police continue to appeal for witnesses as their investigation progresses.
