yaptırımların Avrupa Birliği'ni etkilememesi için "engelleme statüsünü" etkinleştirmesini istedi. Sanchez, ABD merkezli X şirketinin sosyal paylaşım sitesindeki hesabından "İspanya göz yummayacak." başlığı ile yaptığı açıklamada, "Uluslararası adaleti savunanlara yaptırım uygulamak, tüm insan hakları sistemini tehlikeye atıyor. Avrupa Birliği (AB) bu zulüm karşısında kayıtsız kalamaz. Bu nedenle bugün Komisyon'u, Uluslararası Ceza Mahkemesi (UCM) ve Birleşmiş Milletler'in bağımsızlığını ve Gazze'deki soykırımı sona erdirmek için yaptıkları eylemleri korumak amacıyla engelleme statüsünü etkinleştirmeye çağırıyoruz." ifadelerini kullandı. ABD'nin BM üyelerine ve Gazze'deki soykırımı araştıran UCM'ye uyguladığı yaptırımlara yanıt olarak bu açıklamayı yapan Sanchez'in etkinleştirilmesini istediği engelleme statüsü, AB'nin çıkarlarını etkileyen üçüncü ülkelerin yasalarını askıya almasına olanak tanıyan bir mekanizma olarak biliniyor. İspanya Başbakanı, ABD'nin 2025'in başından beri UCM üyelerine uyguladığı ve şu anda on bir hakim ve savcıyı etkileyen yaptırımlara karşı önlem alınmasını istiyor. Geçen yıl şubatta, ABD Başkanı Donald Trump, İsrail Başbakanı Binyamin Netanyahu ve eski Savunma Bakanı Yoav Gallant hakkında çıkarılan tutuklama emrine misilleme olarak UCM'nin üst düzey yetkililerine ve personeline yaptırım uygulayan bir başkanlık emri imzalamıştı. Temmuzda Washington, İsrail'e karşı "kampanyası" nedeniyle BM Filistin Özel Raportörü Francesca Albanese'ye de yaptırım uygulamıştı. Pedro Sanchez'in bu açıklaması, AB Komisyonu Başkanı Ursula von der Leyen'e gönderdiği bir mektubun ardından geldi.
